James River Farms began in the early 70’s when Emil & Mae Stange moved from Springfield, MO to their rural home with 15 acres near Rogersville, MO. Emil bought a few head of Hereford cattle to start and through the years acquired more property and cattle. James River Farms was once one of the premier breeders of Simmental cattle, which included his purchase of the Bar 5 Ranch in Canada.
Emil had decided to cross breed some Red Angus with his Simmentals. He immediately became impressed with the Red Angus cattle and decided to switch to a Red Angus operation exclusively at the end of the 1990’s. His goal was to become the best Red Angus breeder in the country. He was moving in that direction until his and Mae’s death in 2006.
Now, with Aaron Crosby still in charge of Cattle Operations, as he has been for the last 10 years, the Stange Family is “Continuing the Tradition of Excellence”. We are just as committed to the Red Angus breed as our father was and hope to make him proud.
Today, James River Farms is an 800 acre cattle and hay operation with 120 registered Red Angus cattle and 50 commercial cattle. We raise over 100 calves each year.
We will sell our Red Angus cattle by Private Treaty. We will sell bulls anytime, but the best selection is in the spring, so call early for a visit and to see our latest offering. We will also sell females either as young heifers or as cow-calf pairs.
Also, watch for the dates of our annual “Spring Open House”. That is a great opportunity to meet us and see what is available for sale. Call Aaron (417-300-1817) or Butch (417-753-3278) for information on any of your Red Angus needs.
We bale over 3000 large round bales of Alfalfa and grass hay per year. Of course, we feed some of this hay but we also have plenty to sell. So call us if you need any hay!!
